INCREDIBLE INDIA? INCREDIBLE CRUELTY! ARAN LAUNCHES NEW TOURISM BOYCOTT INITIATIVE TO ENFORCE EXISTING BAN TO STOP 'JALLIKATTU'
This week ARAN will launch a new 'boycott' drive to support efforts in India to enforce an existing ban on the cruel Indian, Jallikattu, which is currently going un-enforced, but what is Jallikattu? Jallikattu is a cruel contact game in which terrified bulls are surrounded by hundreds of shouting men, are hit with fists, have their tails twisted and pulled – and some even snapped and broken – and are jumped on and wrestled to the ground. Men pounce on the backs of bulls, sometimes alone, sometimes together and attempt to wrestle him to the ground. There are reports that chili powder is rubbed into the bulls’ eyes, they are given alcohol and then have to undergo the trauma of being chased by mobs who try to overpower and bring them down. Investigations at five Jallikattu events after these regulations had come into place documented bulls being tied so tightly it would cause them severe discomfort and pain, hit with fists, having their tails twisted and pulled, jumped on and wrestled to the ground. Not only is Jallikattu cruel to animals, it also poses a threat to public safety. In one four-day period in January 2011 again after these regulations came to be, 215 people sustained injuries during Jallikattu events. Out of this, 154 people were spectators who suffered injuries, two people died. Click here to see the Jallikattu. The campaign initiative has already started making headlines in India, click here for a leading newspaper article, click here for national Indian TV news coverage of our campaign, and here for another news article.
ARAN has started contacting Indian officials, tourist agencies and others to inform them of our efforts to highlight the cruel spectacle here in Ireland and across Europe with our 'ad' which is a mock-up of the 'Incredible India' tourist ad's that promote the beautiful country. India is such a beautiful country and so are the people, so let's take the suffering of the cows out of Jallikattu and enforce the ban.
MEDIA STORM THRUSTS BLOOD SPORTS AND CRUELTY TO ANIMALS INTO THE PUBLIC SPOTLIGHT AND GENERATES NATIONAL DEBATE
It’s often said that if you want to create positive change, you've got to rock-the-boat, and that’s exactly what ARAN does and we do a damn good job. Thanks to our fast and quirky response to Ballymaloe House and Rachel Allen, the animals’ plight has being heard in every corner of the country, a seed for positive change has now being instilled into most people whom we can ensure will now question their treatment of animals. Read on for the good news or click here for a fifty minute interview on Newstalk radio that lightly sums the current campaign and other issues, up. Ballymaloe House and Rachel Allen have hit the headlines this week in almost every part of the country for all the wrong reasons, but why? As many readers will be aware, Rachel Allen posted an image of her on Facebook in the run up to Christmas that features her holding a shotgun standing beside the bodies of dead, tormented birds that lay across the bonnet of her jeep. This prompted a deluge of correspondence from members of the public, her fans, and of course animal lovers across the nation outraged that someone this high-profile would be seen totting a shotgun beside dead birds. While this was brewing, ARAN and others were welcoming a decision by Ballymaloe House in Co. Cork that the establishment was not going to host hunting hounds on New Year’s Day 2011. Sadly, on the Day, thanks to local supporters, Ballymaloe House was documented doing everything they originally planned. Their statement that followed did not stack up, considering their previous intentions, because of concerns by those opposed to blood sports and hunting. READ MORE...
ARAN SPARKS NATIONAL DEBATE WITH NEW CAMPAIGN TO STOP THE KILLING OF DOGS IN IRISH POUNDS
Official statistics released by the Department of Environment to ARAN for 2010 revealed that over 5,000 dogs were killed in Irish pounds last year, ARAN believes that figure is much higher considering the many thousands of animals who die on the streets due to starvation, disease, accidents and cruelty situations. To combat the problem just in time for christmas, we kicked off a new campaign that will tour various Irish cities that have the highest dog-pound kill rates, a team of campaigners from ARAN laying “dead” in real donated “blood” covered body bags in a cordoned off “crime scene” to symbolise the death of dogs in pounds taken out in bags. Another team spoke with shoppers and the media about the importance of giving a helpless animal a permanent, forever loving home through a shelter or reputable rescue center who are busting at the seems with desperate animals all looking for a good home. A couple of campaigners held posters with an image of a dead dog with the tagline ‘Buying Animals is Killing Animals, Adopt – Don’t Buy'. The event struck a serious cord with the many who stopped-by to get a glimpse of what was going on. Click here to see our campaigners in action. READ MORE...
NEW 2011 INVESTIGATION EXPOSES IRELAND'S SHAMEFUL FUR FACTORY FARMS, AGAIN!
Released the findings of a new 2011 undercover investigation into Ireland's shameful fur factory farms, showing that yet again, animal suffering, is still very much business as usual. The recently obtained footage from an Irish mink farm, reveals images of animal suffering, including painful injuries on mink's tails; cramped, aged and filthy cages riddled with the animal faeces, and more shockingly the images of stressed, traumatised and balding animals; which spotlights the stereotypical behaviour associated with intensive farming. Ireland's government are seeking submissions into Irish fur farms which close on December 31. The campaign received impressive media coverage including a full page exclusive article in the Irish Daily Mirror with a follow up from Irish newspaper, Foinse, radio stations such as Ocean FM, Highland Radio, Radio Kerry and Near FM also covering the issue. To launch the campaign, a giant mobile billboard shadowed the Department of Agriculture in Dublin with a message 'FUR FARMING: TIME FOR A BAN', before taking to the streets to garner public support. ARAN'S 'ALL-IRELAND MARCH AND RALLY AGAINST ANIMAL ABUSE 2011' A MASSIVE SUCCESS!
There was happiness, there was emotional tears and more to the point there was a fire burning inside the many who attended ARAN’s fourth ‘All-Ireland March and Rally Against Animal Abuse’ in Cork City on October 29. Media coverage leading up to and after the event was fantastic with local Cork newspapers such as The Cork Independent, The Cork News and The Evening Echo running hard-hitting stories on our rally and our campaign for new legislation. 'CHARITY HERO AWARD' - VOTE FOR ARAN'S JOHN CARMODY TODAY AND IT MAY RAISE €1000 TO HELP ARAN FIGHT CRUELTY TO ANIMALS!
On October 16, ARAN founder John Carmody, was nominated for a special 'Charity Hero Award', for his roughly sixteen years fighting animal abuse, and if he wins ARAN will receive a €1000 donation that we will ensure is used to fund our school educational programme like this one here with almost 200 students. In November we've a new line up of more school talks and presentations, however, we always want to do more! VOTING HAS NOW CLOSED.
Take just a quick moment and click here http://www.bettertogether.ie/content/john-carmody and give me your five star vote which is at the top of the page. Be sure to forward this email far and wide and if possible put it up on Facebook and encourage everyone you know to vote, 'share' and 'like'! If we get this large donation we'll ensure even more animals are saved and more cruelty exposed. No one gets paid at ARAN, we're all volunteers and as a matter of fact, we only started fundraising in 2008 despite fighting animal abuse for sixteen years now.
I am absolutely delighted I have been nominated for this award, however, there are so many other amazing volunteers who work so hard behind the scenes at ARAN who make our fine reputable organisation what it is today, a fierce, deadly opponent of animal abuse. ARAN would never be the vibrant voice it is without these volunteers and of course our members, supporters and donors.
Thank you,
John Carmody, Founder of ARAN
ARAN CONDEMNS UK BADGER SLAUGHTER ON BBC1 NATIONAL TELEVISION AND CALLS FOR HUMANE SOLUTIONS
In an interview that went out to over 1 million viewers on BBC1 national television, an ARAN spokesman complained about the wreckless plans to slaughter tens of thousands of badgers in a proposed badger cull that has been going on since the 1970's with little or no effect on the spread of tuberculosis. ARAN condemns the announcement by Minister for Agriculture, Caroline Spelman, who made the case for the slaughter of badgers by free-shooting in two large-scale “pilot studies” to be conducted next year in parts of England badly affected by bovine tuberculosis, before being rolled out. The slaughter of badgers as a means of controlling bovine TB has been widely criticised by scientists and conservation experts including Sir David Attenborough. and Professor Lord Krebs amongst others. ARAN & FUR FREE ALLIANCE APPLAUD EU COURT RULING ON SEAL PRODUCT TRADE BAN
ARAN and our colleagues from the Fur Free Alliance commended a landmark decision by the European General Court to dismiss a case challenging the 2009 European Union prohibition on trade in products of commercial seal kills. The world's largest commercial sealing interests, together with fur industry lobby groups and a number of Inuit sealing advocates, put forward the case in 2010. The dismissed case (T-18/10) was an application to the European Court requesting an annulment of European Parliament and Council Regulation (EC) No 1007/2009, which prohibits the placing on the market of products from commercial seal hunts throughout the European Union. The European Court did not have to reach the merits of the case having found that the applicants were not "directly concerned" by the seals regulation, a key factor in determining whether a legal challenge is admissible. Case T-526/10, a secondary application by the same group, is still before the Court. It requests an annulment of European Parliament and Council Regulation No 737/2010, which outlines how the ban is enforced. READ MORE…
IMAGINE BEING KILLED FOR YOUR COAT? ARAN'S LIVE RE-ENACTMENT OF THE INFAMOUS ANTI-FUR COMMERCIAL
The winter months are fast approaching and ARAN campaigners are kicking into action this week to stage a live re-enactment of an infamous anti-fur commercial that was produced in Dublin many years ago for PETA. In the commercial, a woman is 'attacked' and 'beaten' by a man stealing her fur coat, the message? “What If You Were Killed for Your Coat?” Here is ARAN's action on the day, click here.
In Cork today, our live re-enactment was highlighted by a full page article in the Irish Daily Mirror newspaper talking about the commercial and ARAN's anti-fur campaign, along with our push to enact modern animal protection laws and an Irish ban on fur factory farms in the upcoming Animal Health & Welfare Bill. Shortly after 12 noon a team of four campaigners gathered on Patrick Street in Cork City to stage the enactment with our activist posing with a real fur coat that had been donated by a lady with a change of heart. Shortly after the event that grabbed the attention of passersby on the street, the activist posed 'dead' whilst others held signs reading, 'Imagine Being Killed for Your Coat', 'Fur is Murder'. Shorty after, RTE Radio,Dublin's Spin, 4FM & Dublin's 98FM had shows playing on separate stations at the same time with 4FM talking for over one hour about ARAN's campaigns, ARAN's Rita-Marie Lawlor done a fantastic job on Dublin's 98FM and others were also covering the event giving us another unique opportunity to talk about our anti-fur campaign and our work to encourage a kinder, more compassionate society. The Irish Examiner ran a great article in their printed paper and online. READ MORE...
LIMERICK ARAN CAMPAIGNERS GATHER TO PROTEST DUFFY'S ANIMAL-ACT CIRCUS
For a time ARAN turned it's campaigning towards other areas that needed immediate attention and urgent action, however, we are now re-focussing our efforts to spotlight animal suffering in the circus with our long running 'Stop Circus Suffering in Ireland' campaign with our colleagues at Animal Defenders International (ADI). Click here to read ADI & ARAN's Irish circus investigation report. This week Duffy's Circus rolled into Limerick City after been absent reportedly for three years, prior to the circus setting up shop, our campaigners staged a press photo-call with our "elephant" 'Nellie', in which she repeatedly crossed over the road on Limerick's O'Connell Street during green lights, hundreds of leaflets were distributed to members of the public, parents and teenagers. The good news is that many people stopped to say they have given up supporting animal-act circuses and are now looking for a circus which is animal-act free. READ MORE...
REACHING OUT TO THE YOUNGER GENERATION AND CREATING A POSITIVE DIFFERENCE IN IRISH SOCIETY FOR ALL ANIMALS
ARAN would never exist if it were not for our hard working, loyal and dedicated volunteers from all walks of life - people who give up their free time and most often go out of their way to bring about positive change for all animals. We know only to well just how depressing animal abuse is, sometimes the easiest thing to do is to turn your back, look away and just wish and live in hope that one day all the cruelty and suffering will end, but sadly it won't, if anything, it enables the abuse to live on. At ARAN we're geared up to face the issues and challenges head on, and whilst most of our work goes on quietly behind the scenes, we're very much out on the streets almost every week reaching out to the younger generation and also to people in general showing them that there is a kinder, more compassionate way of living that does not have to involve the screams, torment and torture of an innocent animal. ARAN AWARD'S HOMELESS DUBLIN MAN WITH 'COMPASSIONATE CITIZEN AWARD' FOR RISKING LIFE TO SAVE DROWNING RABBIT
"The story seemed to genuinely touch the nation and it was lovely to see the Animal Rights Action Network (ARAN) handing him (Mr. John Byrne) a thoroughly well deserved award for his bravery and concern for animals" — Ian O'Doherty, Irish Independent
If there were ever a memorable moment in ARAN’s sixteen year history, and there’s been a few, it was on July 12 on Dublin’s O’ Connell Bridge where we presented a homeless Dublin man, Mr. John Byrne, with our ‘Compassionate Citizen Award’ for risking his life to saving his companion rabbit, Barney, who was tossed into the River Liffey by an 18 year-old passerby. Mr. Byrne risked his life by jumping into the freezing cold river to save the rabbit and waited for up to forty-five minutes for emergency services to rescue them both. Click here for footage of the daring rescue and to see a story that was to have touched our nation’s hearts. After the rescue, media reports talked about the heroic act of bravery and kindness by Mr. Byrne. That same week, ARAN announced we were to honour Mr. Byrne with our award in recognition for his compassion and fast on the ball thinking that saved the life of his rabbit. We also used this opportunity to get word out to our nation about how animals in our society are so vulnerable, and the need for stronger laws to protect them, our award ended up grabbing the nations headlines, read on! ARAN MEMBERS SUPPORT 'NO TO CHINA' CAMPAIGN AT WALK FOR GREYHOUNDS
Members of Animal Rights Action Network (ARAN) attended the 'Walk for Greyhounds' organized primarily by some greyhound welfare groups in Ireland, which ARAN has no connections with or affiliation to. The walk began at St Stephan's Green at roughly 1pm had many attend with their rescued greyhounds, lurchers and rescued dogs for a walk along Grafton Street, along Nassau Street and working it's way back to St Stephen's Green. Lots of people attending held signs calling for an end to plans for a greyhound stadia in China and others highlighting an end to greyhound racing. ARAN members attended this event to support the 'No to China' campaign which is working to stop proposed plans of greyhound racing in China and our work for an abolition of greyhound racing. Action is ARAN's middle name where we take action to fight animal abuse, and, Network is a strong ethos we firmly believe in where we work with groups and organizations with whom we can find common ground. NEW ARAN AD WARNS 'TOO MUCH SEX CAN BE A BAD THING'
ARAN launched a new ad which features none other than playboy and soccer star, Ryan Giggs. The ad shows Giggs, who has recently come under criticism for his sexual exploits, alongside the words "Too Much Sex Can Be a Bad Thing … for little animals too. Help keep your dogs and cats out of trouble, always spay or neuter”. Other celebrities who have appeared in "Too Much Sex" ads include adult-film stars Sasha Grey, Jenna Jameson, and Ron Jeremy as well as golfer Tiger Woods, albeit involuntarily in his case, after publicly apologizing for multiple extramarital affairs. It's hitting the media from Ireland, UK and as far as India. Click here.
Animal overpopulation is a serious problem in Ireland that goes unnoticed. Every year, tens of thousands of cats and dogs enter Irish animal shelters, and roughly half of them must be destroyed because there are not enough good homes—and part of the blame has to be borne by people who do not spay or neuter their animal companions. Gigg's has no formal affiliation with ARAN and has not previewed or endorsed the ad, but ARAN says that the image and the idea were too good to pass up when it came to helping to fight the animal overpopulation crisis.
'SKINNED' ARAN KICK'S OFF IRISH MONTH OF ACTION AGAINST CANADA'S BABY SEAL SLAUGHTER

This year's slaughter has started and already ARAN is kicking into gear with a month of action to highlight the slaughter that is taking place right now on the ice flows of Canada. Click here to see the action.
To kick it off, a team of five members from ARAN? one wearing little more than red body paint lay beside the Canadian flag whilst covered in 'blood' for a press photocall on Dublin's Henry Street. During the exciting action that got everyone's attention, an ARAN member screened footage to many passersby of previous hunts in Canada, this footage is so powerful, that it has been known to change people's lives almost instantly. ARAN TAKES SEAL CAMPAIGN TO CORK AND GALWAY
What a busy week of action for the animals it's been! Ending on a good note were two lively and successful events in Galway and Cork to raise public awareness for our campaign to stop the Canadian baby seal slaughter. In Galway, we continued to receive further press coverage later in the week with Galway Sentiniel and Galway Advertiser running articles, on Saturday afternoon Galway Bay FM were running our event as the main news bulletin which was great to bring awareness to the issue of Canada killing baby seals and of course about cruelty to animals in general. Hundreds of email address were taken for people to learn more – in the coming days ARAN will be mailing all these people specific information on how they can take effective action to stop Canada killing baby seals, we will also use this opportunity to encourage them to take action to help animals and of course to become more aware of various other issues that are on their doorsteps. GOOD NEWS: WATCH 200 STUDENTS SEE ANIMAL ABUSE UNMASKED!
A a team of three dedicated volunteers coordinated two separate ARAN educational classes that spoke to the teenagers about our campaign work, drive to stop cruelty to animals, how they can take action for animals , vegetarian and veganism, spay & neutering, Greyhound Racing, Hunting, Animal Experimentation, Canada's baby seal hunt, and of course our biggest campaign, 'Stop Circus Suffering in Ireland'. ARAN's particular approach in school talks are seriously changing hearts and minds and we can see it, we hear about it too! Whilst we are doing what we can to bring about change in society today, we firmly believe that our educational work will truly leave a lasting legacy for future generations. During our talk and video presentation, we were completely taken back by how engaged the students were in our class and how interested they were to hear of what we were doing. Since January of this year ARAN has coordinated more than a dozen educational classes alone, not including today's and with many more scheduled. After each class, we provided children with leaflets, buttons, stickers and ways to start taking action with the group or indeed any animal protection group in order to make their voice heard. Already, we have started receiving emails and text messages from the students wanting to get involved. READ MORE...
RE-LAUNCHING OUR ‘STOP CIRCUS SUFFERING’ IN IRELAND CAMPAIGN
We are now refocussing our long term efforts to expose animal act circuses. Since ARAN’s foundation, we have been coordinating our ‘Stop Circus Suffering in Ireland’ campaign, which is highly effective at educating members of the public to steer clear of any circuses using animals. Our campaign also focuses on getting into schools, and of course, legislation to outlaw animal act circuses. We’ve successfully supported local councillors in Cork and Fingal Council, to bring in motions to ban animal act circuses and are currently working behind the scenes to try and enforce this legislation. DOZENS OF ARAN MEMBERS PROTEST FINE GAEL’S TWISTED WARD UNION HUNT REPEAL PLANS

ARAN CAMPAIGNER CONFRONTS FINE GAEL’S ENDA KENNY URGING HIM NOT TO REVERSE WARD UNION HUNT CRUELTY
If there is one effective way to make your voice heard for the animals it’s to take your message directly to those in power, and that’s exactly what ARAN founder, John Carmody did. And whilst we know self praise is no praise, this brave action indeed, deserves more than enough praise. With his hands covered in ‘blood’ whilst holding a sign that read, “Hands Up If You Support Blood Sports”, Carmody confronted Fine Gael leader, Enda Kenny to urge him to stop his stated intention of repealing the Ward Union hunt legislation, which at this stage is looking highly likely if the polls are anything to go by. DOZENS OF CAMPAIGNERS SPOTLIGHT ANIMAL ABUSE AT CLONMEL HARE COURSING FINALS
What a fantastic day of action it was for the animals—We just could not have done it without you. As campaigners from ARAN and ICABS woke to the sounds of their alarm clock in preparation for the day ahead, Newstalk national radio was already running news of our lively demonstration to expose cruel hare coursing at the Clonmel finals, taking place that afternoon. The station has a huge listenership, prompting calls to ARAN from their listeners for more information on hare coursing and our campaigns against cruelty to animals. Going out of your-way and taking to the streets, is what ARAN supporters are all about when it comes to animals in need. From across the nation, our loyal supporters came from Cork, Limerick, Clare, Galway, Tipperary, Wexford, Waterford, Dublin, Kildare, Meath, and one ARAN supporter coming from as far afield as Scotland. A group of other activists from ARAN daubed themselves in red ‘blood’ to symbolise the cruelty associated with all blood sports. CANDLE LIGHT VIGIL BRINGS HOPE FOR ANIMALS NEEDING OUR HELP
One question we are consistently asked by countless supporters in Ireland is, ‘What can I do to make a difference?’ For many compassionate people around the country, and around the world, the answer is that one can make and be that difference! Although it often seems like we’re banging our heads against a brick wall, as the cliché goes, we must continue to keep banging, for times will get worse for the animals if we stand back and do nothing - which is by far the easiest thing to do. Here in Ireland, as we look back over the years, we can’t help but take some comfort knowing that we’re making a big difference. We’ve brought cruelty to animals to the forefront of the national media, the public and inside of government buildings. We’re placing ‘animal rights’ firmly in the mainstream and we’re making people on the street understand, in an understanding way, why it’s important to live a cruelty-free, compassionate lifestyle.
